I’m back again for another year, and it is time to start the year off right with a fishing report. I know we keep saying this is going to be the best year for walleye fishing, but it has been so far, and it just keeps getting better. We like to talk about both types of fishing in this column – casting and trolling – for everyone that reads this. We have great fishermen in this industry that can provide us with much information for the readers. There are strictly casters and strictly trollers, and we also have captains that are set up to do both. There are many options to choose from when you come to Lake Erie to fish, whether it’s in your own boat or you’re going out on a charter.

The jigging bite has been picking up around the reefs at the firing range and the small reefs around the islands. They have been using Hair jigs – 3/4 oz to 1 oz jig-tipped with shiners, and at times nontipped. It seems to be a morning bite in shallower waters for the jig bite. A few guys have been trying some harnesses with the right wind conditions as well.

Trollers have had the best luck between South Bass Island and Kelleys Island in Camo Looking Waters. Bait of choice this spring has been Dead Eye Crank Baits’ Deep Divers. They have been running, and 70 to 90 back seems to be the spot. They also have been running on their down rods at Dead Eye Babys, behind 50Tru Trips 35 back.

I myself have not fished but only a couple of times this year, but we have had many reports coming in. People are doing very well when they can get out due to the weather conditions we have had this year. I will have more to come as we start fishing more now.

Until next week, Keep A Tight Line
