  • Story Time, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.; Children. Bring your little ones to listen to some stories, sing a few songs, and get wiggles out! Children will receive a snowflake take and make craft. No registration required. Theme: snowflakes
  • Kids Vision Boards, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; Children. Students grades 1st-12th are invited to start the new year off with goal setting and envisioning their future for 2024! What is a vision board? A vision board is a collage of words and images that represents your goals or dreams for the future. To make the collage, we’ll supply magazines, glue, and poster board. Feel free to bring your own images, stickers, magazines, or other decorative items to add to your project! Registration is not required. Children under 8 years old should be accompanied by an adult.

  • Marblehead Peninsula Writing Group, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7:30 p.m.; Adults. Join the Marblehead Peninsula Writing Group at their bi-monthly (twice per month) meeting! Get feedback on your own writing, provide advice for other writers, and learn more about the craft. This is a supportive group, open to all levels of writers and facilitated by an experienced writing teacher. You don’t have to bring any of your own writing to share; all who are interested in writing are welcome.   • One-On-One Tech Help, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Call Ida Rupp Public Library at (419) 732-3212 to schedule a 30-minute help session.
  • DIY Sugar Scrub, Ida Rupp Public Library; 2 – 3 p.m.; Adults. Looking for a way to unwind after the holiday season? Make a sugar scrub with us to take home! Sugar scrubs are popular for their exfoliating properties, as well as various aromatherapy benefits based on scents, and are a great way to practice self-care. Registration is required for this program and will open on December 22nd.
  • Youth Book Club, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.; Children. All ages of kids, tweens, and teens are welcome to the first installment of our Youth Book Club! Each month, we will meet at the library to discuss the books we read with a winter setting. To participate, bring any book of any reading level that you would like to discuss. There will be snacks and a winter themed activity to complete!
  • Sit and Stitch with Heather, Erie Islands Library; 4 – 6 p.m.; Adults. Join Heather Durdil, creator of the “Spins a Yarn” podcast and knitter extraordinaire, on the first Thursday of each month at the library to work on your yarn project. Knit, crochet, needlepoint, counted cross-stitch…any project is acceptable! No need to register.

Monday January 8

  • Mindful Mornings, Ida Rupp Public Library; 9 – 10 a.m.; Children. On the second Monday of every month, join us for an hour of mindfulness. Learn about meditation, the benefits of coloring, and deep breathing. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.
  • Vineyard Book Discussion, Ida Rupp Public Library; 1 – 2 p.m.; Adults. Visit Ohio Living Vineyard on Catawba for a monthly book discussion group meeting in the Community Room. No registration required. Anyone is welcome to join this book discussion. Participation is not limited to those living at the Vineyard. Discussion this month is on Go As A River by Shelley Read
  • Monday STEM Explorers, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.; Children. Children ages 5-12 are invited to join Megan at 4:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month to explore a new STEM topic. Since the library is not open on New Year’s Day, January’s STEM program is on the second Monday of the month. This month, we will learn about Margaret Hamilton and binary code. Children will use binary code to create and decode secret messages. All supplies will be provided. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.
  • Preschool Story Time, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 10 – 10:30 a.m.; Children. Join veteran teacher Jane Taylor for a half-hour story time: Fingerplays, stories, and rhythm and rhyme will define our Story Time. Kids will listen to a snowman who sneezes, just before his body freezes. Songs, crafts, snacks and more. That’s what our Story Time has in store! Ages three and older. Parents and caregivers are asked to stay with their children. No registration required.
  • Preschool Story Time, Erie Islands Library; 10 – 10:30 a.m.; Children. Join Librarian Karen Wilhelm for a half hour of reading, song and a craft to take home. Parents and caregivers are asked to stay with their children. No registration required.

  • Bad Art Contest, Ida Rupp Public Library; 1 – 2:30 p.m.; Adults. Tired of the demand for perfect in your everyday life? Enjoy making art but don’t feel confident in your ability to do it well? This competition is for you! Come to the library to let your creativity loose without pressure and make some “bad” art. Whoever has the worst art will win a prize! There is no need to register for this event, but things may get messy, so make sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint or glue on.
  • Teen Movie, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4 – 6 p.m.; Teens. We will be watching Barbie (PG-13) today. Enjoy some comical adventures of Barbie and Ken while eating popcorn. Grades 6-12.

  • Pulitzer Prize Book Club, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; Adults. Visit Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to read & discuss a Pulitzer Prize winning book. Now is your chance to read one and discuss it with a lively group! This month the group will discuss The Confessions of Nat Turner, by William Styron. No registration required.
  • Wine Cork Phone Holder, Erie Islands Library; 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.; Adults. Using wine corks, design and decorate your own phone holder to always know where your phone is or to display for easy viewing. Limit 10 people, teens and adults only due to use of glue guns.   • Dungeons & Dragons Jr, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4 – 6 p.m.; Children. Kids ages 7-12 are invited to join us on a grand adventure! Come play Dungeons & Dragons with Corvid, a seasoned player with a deep love for nerdy things. You will slowly learn the rules of the game as we play–no experience required! For those with a fond interest or those just hearing about D&D, all are welcome to embark on a fantasy journey. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult, who may participate if they wish! This month’s selection: Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Approx. 90 minutes. Rating PG. No registration necessary.

Friday January 19

  • Yarn Bird Craft, Ida Rupp Public Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Adults. For this craft, adults will take three different colors of yarn and create a bird! These can be used as decorations in a number of ways. Supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration required!
  • Marblehead Peninsula Coffee Hour, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Join us for FREE coffee, tea, and conversation at the Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library. Our special guest this month: Marblehead Mayor John Starcher. The idea behind the coffee hour is to give Peninsula residents and employees a chance to talk with each other in a comfortable and civil setting. This is an open, free-form conversation. Meet your neighbors! Network with other organizations! No registration required.

Saturday January 20

  • Crafting with Magoo: Kids’ Heart Collage, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Children. We’re gathering the materials. Bring your imagination and after that, it’s up to you. Pick out a heart, add glue, collage. There is no wrong way to create this. You can layer or keep it simple! Let’s have some fun! Registration required. Limit of ten participants. Registration opens on January 6.
  • First Annual Library “Bar” Crawl, Erie Islands Library; 10 – 11:30 a.m.; All Ages. Our First Annual “BAR” Crawl! Do you think you have a winning bar cookie recipe? Great! Bring it to the library for a chance to win a gift card to one of the local businesses. Here’s what to do: Let us know you are coming to submit a treat by stopping in or calling us at 285-4004. Leave your name and phone number so we can remind you the day beforehand. Bring 4 dozen sample size (bite size) servings to the library on Saturday, January 13th between 9:45-10:15. You are not required to stay with your entry during the entire event, but we would love to have you stay to sample all the goodies and to vote for your favorite. Please bring your creation ready to be displayed and include any necessary utensils. (Please label all your utensils.) Voting will be from 10:30-noon or while supplies last! Everyone is invited to vote for their favorite entry. Donations will be accepted for Friends of the Library who sponsor many of our activities.

Thursday January 25

  • Lighthouses of Western Lake Erie, Ida Rupp Public Library; 5 – 6 p.m.; Adults. Local historian Richard Norgard will be presenting about the numerous lighthouses that stand along the coastlines of Western Lake Erie. No registration is required to attend. Richard Norgard is a published author of two mystery novels, with a third on the way in the winter of 2024. He is also the President of the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy and a member of the Ottawa County Historical Society.
  • Owls of Ohio, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; All Ages. Join Erie MetroParks naturalist Martyn Drabik-Hamshare for a hands-on presentation on the Owls of Ohio. You will learn about the diversity of species present within our state, their varying ecologies, and the behaviors that make them the masters of the night! This is an all-ages program, with no registration required.
  • Hot Wheels Night, Erie Islands Library; 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.; Children. Looking for something to do after school with your friends? Join us at the library to design your own race track for Hot Wheel cars. Who will have the fastest track? The longest track? We have everything needed: tracks, connectors, cars. Fun for all ages! No registration required.

Then, using watercolors, they will decorate their project. Please wear clothes you are comfortable painting in! Registration is required. There will be supplies for 11 children. Registration opens on January 16th at 8:00 a.m. All supplies will be provided. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
