This week’s algal bloom forecast for Lake Erie

Sep 9, 2020 | Around Ottawa County | 0 comments

A bloom of Microcystis cyanobacteria continues in the western basin of Lake Erie. Recent satellite imagery has been heavily clouded, but indicates the bloom is present along the the Ohio coast to Catawba Island. Along the Michigan coast the bloom extends to Point Mouillee State Game Area.

Observed winds mixed surface bloom concentrations near the Islands. Sampling on Sept. 1 indicated toxin concentrations are below the recreational threshold at all locations.

Keep pets and yourself out of the water in areas where scum is forming. Forecast winds will promote mixing and minimize transport of Microcystis concentrations through today (Thursday, Sept. 10)
