Tom Schaefer, age 73, a twenty year resident of Catawba Island, passed away on March 14 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Linda; his siblings, Patricia Carlin (John), Richard Schaefer (Marilyn) and Jack Schaefer (Courtney). His four children, Thomas Schaefer (Mary), Chad Schaefer (Stephanie), Sara Zingales (Dino) and Randy Schaefer. His four step-children, Sharon Horgan (Brian), James Ehrbar, John J. Biszantz and Brian Biszantz (Brittaney), along with sixteen adoring grandchildren.
Tom was born on July 29, 1948, in Saul St. Marie, Mich. to Earl and Carol (Bernard) Schaefer. While growing up in the Upper Peninsula, Tom became a skilled craftsman while working at his family’s marina. Upon graduating from DeTour High School, Tom moved to Cleveland. He joined the Pipefitters Local 120 and was a proud member for forty years.
Upon retirement he pursued home remodeling. Tom worked hard so he could play hard, meeting many wonderful friends along the way. He loved pleasure boating and fishing on Lake Erie. His winters were spent in Ft. Myers, Fla. He was known for his infectious smile and his kind, compassionate spirit.
Tom was laid to rest on June 4 at Catawba Island Cemetery in a private service.
