Thomas W. Maher, 77, of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

He was born on May 6, 1948, in Greenville, Ohio, and was the son of Thomas R. and Mary Maher. Tom was a 1966 graduate of Greenville High School and received his Bachelor’s (Marketing Education) and Master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University in 1970 and 1972.

Known to many as Mr. Maher, Tom taught Marketing and Sales (DECA) at Port Clinton High School for 30 years, during which his students won a record-setting number of national and state awards. He also served as the assistant tennis coach and as a statistician for the basketball team. Tom was nationally respected in the marketing education field. After retirement, he conducted marketing and sales seminars in the Midwest.

Tom was adored and admired by his family. He is survived by his sisters (Mary Ann and Kathleen) and brother (Bill), nieces, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and devoted friends. Tom is also survived by a legion of accomplished students. (When asked if he had children, Tom always answered: “My students are my kids.”) Tom was preceded in death by his parents and brother (Bob).

Tom was a passionate Cleveland Cavaliers fan, and a very frustrated Cincinnati Reds fan, and claimed to be a disinterested Cleveland Browns follower; however, one would be hard-pressed to find the disinterest.

Teaching was Tom’s calling. A dedicated and compassionate educator, he touched the lives of generations of students. Tom’s concern for his students did not end when the bell rang. Through whatever challenges they faced, students knew they could turn to Mr. Maher for support. His relentless work ethic, gentle guidance, and warm encouragement inspired students to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. Their many successes—in high school and beyond—delighted him.

George Bernard Shaw wrote: “Life is no ‘brief candle’ for me. It is a sort of splendid torch, which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” Tom’s torch—and legacy—burns on through his students and the community he so faithfully served.
