This can be a stressful time of year for taxpayers who are often overwhelmed by the job of correctly filling out federal and state income tax forms. With the Internal Revenue Service back in action after a short shutdown of the agency, and local experts are ready to help around Ottawa County.
The Community Support Services of Ottawa County will again be offering Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free income tax preparation services for the 2018 filing year. Services will be available in two locations this season.
Tax returns can be prepared at the Community Support Services office located in the Sutton Center, 1848 E. Perry St., Port Clinton beginning Jan. 28. Free tax preparers are also available at the new Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) Head Quarters, 127 S. Front St., Fremont, beginning Feb. 4..
CSS will continue to offer the “Drop-Off” option for the 2018 filing season. The “Drop-off” system is designed to provide convenience to the taxpayer, payees and authorized representatives for disabled taxpayers and as a way to help medically vulnerable populations avoid the flu and other illnesses. Drop-off kits will be available at the Community Support Services office in Port Clinton, the main reception desk at GLCAP and at each of the Senior Centers in Fremont, Clyde and Gibsonburg.
The Community Support Services VITA free income tax program is entering its 10th year of service to our communities. Unlike AARP, VITA does not limit age restrictions to be eligible for services. Very few income restrictions apply and residents of any county can utilize the services at either of the two locations.
