Republican State Sen. Theresa Gavarone, whose district includes Ottawa County, has filed an intent to run for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Democrat Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives and among the most senior members of Congress.

Gavarone, 55, joins Republicans J.R. Majewski of Port Clinton and Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, a Canton, Ohio attorney who was Miss USA in 2014, in challenging Kaptur.

The newly redrawn 9th Congressional District is made up of Ottawa, Lucas, Erie, Defiance, Henry, Fulton, Sandusky and Williams counties, and part of northern Wood County.
