I read a Facebook submission from Dave Koebel, who was examining some his corn crop recently and found the tops of the ears of corn either eaten or torn off. It appears to be the work of some wild critters. Anyway, welcome to August. The local corn fields look very impressive this year. Hoping for good yields.

This Saturday and Sunday are big days for Kelleys Island. This is the weekend for the 29th annual Golf Cart Poker Run on Saturday and Jeni Hammond and Cindra Mielke’s Lake Erie swim.

Their Lake Erie swim benefits these ladies’ dedication to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Two young ladies, Jazzy and Caydence will have their dreams come true when Cindra and Jeni come out of the water on Sunday.

The Port Clinton Artists Club will hold its 65th annual Arts in the Park this Saturday and Sunday at Lakeview Park. The event starts at 10 a.m. both days, with a large array of exhibits on the Lake Erie shoreline.

2023 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Port Clinton Area Chamber’s Jerry Lippus Memorial Classic Car Show planned for this Saturday, Aug. 5 from 10.a.m. to 3 p.m. on Madison Street in downtown Port Clinton.

Having lived here most of my life, I can instantly recognize the engine roar of the iconic Ford Tri-Motor. That sound will reverberate in the skies above us as it will be flying out of Put-in-Bay this weekend.

The Oak Harbor Athletic Boosters will be having their annual fall kickoff picnic and membership drive on Sunday, Aug. 13 at 4:30 p.m. at Rocket Stadium.

Magruder’s next monthly community lab screening will be Thursday, Aug. 10, between 8 and 11:30 a.m., at the Magruder Community Clinic 730 Jefferson Street in Port Clinton. The main lab test is a CBC, CMP and Lipid Profile, which includes liver and kidney function, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol, HDL/LDL, Triglycerides and a complete blood count (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood) for $50.

They also offer add-ons that you can add to the testing above, or request on their own: Lipid Profile: $20, Hemoglobin A1C: $20, PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen): $30 TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): $25, Vitamin D: $35.This lab screening is held on the second Thursday each month. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 419-301-4304.  Participants are asked to fast for 12 hours prior to their appointment time, but can have water.  No insurance is accepted.
